Carnival of Awussu

The Carnival of Awussu is one of Tunisia’s most theatrical summer celebrations, held annually in Sousse during late July. The name Awussu derives from the Tunisian Arabic word for August, and the event has deep roots in the coastal city’s tradition of marking midsummer with street spectacle and communal festivity. What began as a neighbourhood celebration has grown into a multi-day carnival that draws tens of thousands of visitors each year.

What to Expect

The centrepiece of Awussu is a grand parade along Sousse’s main Habib Bourguiba Avenue, running toward the seafront. Elaborately decorated floats roll through the crowds, accompanied by brass bands, Tunisian folklore troupes, and international delegations who bring their own dance and music traditions. The atmosphere is loud, colourful, and genuinely crowd-driven — spectators line the avenue several rows deep, and locals lean from balconies above.

Beyond the parade, the carnival spills into the surrounding streets and the port area, with food stalls, fairground rides, and live music stages running into the early hours. Stalls sell grilled corn, brik pastries, and cold drinks. The seafront promenade becomes a gathering point for families and younger crowds well after the official programme ends.

Practical Information

Entry to the street parade and public areas is free. Grandstand seating along the parade route may be available for a small fee, typically arranged through local hotels or tourism offices in Sousse.

Sousse is well connected by train from Tunis (approximately 2 hours, departing Tunis Centrale multiple times daily) and by louage shared taxi from several northern cities. The parade typically starts in the evening, after 8pm, when the heat eases. Arrive at least an hour early to secure a good vantage point along the avenue — the best spots near the reviewing stands fill quickly. Tips for Visitors

Carry cash — most stall vendors along the route do not accept cards. Parking close to the parade route is essentially impossible on the main event night; arriving by train or taxi is far easier. The carnival is family-friendly and generally very safe, though the crowds are dense and pickpockets are active at any large street event, so keep bags secure.
