The louage from Sfax to El Jem is one of the shortest and most useful connections in the Tunisian network. At 6–7 TND per seat and around 40 minutes travel time, it is the simplest way to reach the Roman amphitheatre at El Jem — one of the best-preserved Roman colosseums in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
El Jem sits almost exactly halfway between Sfax and Sousse on the main north–south axis. Travellers staying in Sfax use it for a straightforward half-day. Travellers coming from Tunis or Sousse can also reach El Jem directly, but Sfax is the closest major city and offers the shortest journey time.
The right station in Sfax
Louages to El Jem depart from Sfax’s main louage and bus station, located west of the railway station near the southwestern edge of the old medina. It is accessible from most central hotels by taxi (3-5 TND) or on foot from the medina.
At the station, vehicles run northbound toward Sousse. El Jem is directly on this route. Look for vehicles displaying “El Jem” or “Sousse” — on the Sousse-bound service, passengers for El Jem are dropped at the town rather than going through to Sousse. Confirm your destination is El Jem with the driver or booth attendant before boarding, especially if taking a Sousse-bound vehicle.
The same station handles a wide range of routes. Sfax is one of the busiest louage centres in Tunisia. Navigation is straightforward — the northbound and southbound sections are generally organised separately, and station workers can direct you to the El Jem vehicles if needed.
Fares and payment
The fare from Sfax to El Jem is approximately 6–7 TND per seat as of 2026. This is a fixed fare. Cash only — small-denomination notes are ideal. Fares may be posted at the booth for direct El Jem services; on Sousse-bound services stopping at El Jem, confirm the fare with the driver.
The return fare (El Jem to Sfax) is the same amount.
Frequency and timing
The Sfax–El Jem segment is part of the busy Sfax–Sousse corridor and services run regularly through the day. On weekday mornings between 7am and noon, vehicles depart every 20-30 minutes. This is one of the more comfortable routes for timing: you are unlikely to wait more than 30 minutes at any point before 2pm.
For a day trip from Sfax: aim to board by 9am, which puts you in El Jem before 10am and allows a full morning at the colosseum and museum before the midday heat peaks.
Return: louages back to Sfax run from El Jem’s small station or roadside pickup area. The last reliable service is around 5pm. Do not leave your return until after 6pm on this route — afternoon frequencies drop noticeably.
The journey
Sfax to El Jem is a straightforward run northward on the main road toward Sousse. The landscape is flat agricultural land — olive groves and fields — typical of this part of central Tunisia. No fixed intermediate stops. Journey time is consistently around 40 minutes.
El Jem: what to see
The Roman Amphitheatre of El Jem (also spelled El Djem) is the main reason travellers make this trip. Built in the 3rd century AD, it seats approximately 35,000 and rivals the Colosseum in Rome for scale and preservation. Entry is approximately 12 TND for adults (as of 2026). The amphitheatre is well maintained, clearly signed, and open throughout the day. Walking through the arena floor and up to the upper tiers gives excellent views across the surrounding town and plains.
Immediately adjacent is the El Jem Archaeological Museum, which holds one of the finest collections of Roman mosaics in the world. Entry is included with the amphitheatre ticket or sold separately. The mosaics here — depicting gods, gladiatorial scenes, and daily Roman life in North Africa — are exceptional in quality and scale, and often overlooked by visitors who spend all their time at the amphitheatre itself.
The town centre of El Jem is small and walkable. A local market operates in the streets around the amphitheatre, selling ceramics, olives, and regional produce. There are a few simple cafés near the entrance for coffee and pastries before or after the visit.

Tips for the journey
Go early. El Jem in the late morning is more comfortable than in midday heat. Leave Sfax by 9am, spend 3-4 hours at the amphitheatre and museum, and return by early afternoon.
Bring cash for entry. Entry fees at El Jem are paid at the gate in cash. Having 15-20 TND ready (to cover entry plus a drink and snack nearby) means no delays.
The museum is worth the extra 30 minutes. Many visitors do the amphitheatre in under an hour and then leave. Spending time in the mosaic museum raises the quality of the visit considerably. Allow at least 45 minutes inside.
No need to pre-book. There are no advance tickets for El Jem. Queue at the gate on arrival. Even at peak season, wait times are short.
Consider the train as an alternative. SNCFT trains on the Tunis–Sfax line stop at El Jem station, a short walk from the amphitheatre. The train from Sfax takes around 45-50 minutes. If you have a fixed departure time or travelling with luggage, the train is a clean alternative to the louage.
