There is no direct louage from Tunis to Djerba. The island sits at the southern end of Tunisia, roughly 500 kilometres from the capital, and reaching it by shared taxi requires two separate louage legs and a short car ferry crossing. For most visitors, this is a full travel day. For travellers on a strict budget or those who want to experience the louage network, it is a practical option — but you need to plan the timing carefully to avoid arriving late in Gabes with no onward services.
How the route works
The standard louage route to Djerba runs in two legs:
Leg 1: Tunis (Moncef Bey station) → Gabes
- Fare: 22-26 TND per seat
- Journey time: approximately 3h30-4h
- Departure station: Moncef Bey, southern Tunis
Leg 2: Gabes → Djerba (via Jorf-Ajim ferry)
- Fare: 10-14 TND per seat
- Journey time: approximately 1h15-1h30
- The fare includes the ferry crossing
Ferry crossing: The Gabes-Djerba leg crosses from the mainland to the island via a car ferry between Jorf (on the mainland) and Ajim (on Djerba). The crossing takes around 15 minutes and is free for foot passengers. The Gabes louage typically drives onto the ferry and continues to Houmt Souk on the other side.
Total: Approximately 32-40 TND and 5h30-6h, not including taxi transfers at either end.
Timing is everything
The most important rule on this route is arriving in Gabes before 2pm. Onward louages from Gabes to Djerba run through the day but thin out in the afternoon. If you arrive in Gabes after 3pm, you may face a long wait or find no further service for the day.
To reach Gabes by early afternoon, aim to depart Moncef Bey no later than 9am-10am. This means leaving your hotel in central Tunis by 8:30am at the latest to allow time to reach Moncef Bey and find your vehicle.
The Jorf-Ajim ferry runs frequently — typically every 30-60 minutes during the day — so the ferry itself is not usually a bottleneck. The risk is the louage connection, not the ferry.
Getting to Moncef Bey station
Moncef Bey station is in southern Tunis, around 4 kilometres from the medina. The easiest way to reach it is by taxi (5-8 TND from central Tunis). Allow 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. At the station, ask for the louage to Gabes (not Djerba directly — the station does not run vehicles all the way to the island).
Arriving in Djerba
The louage from Gabes drops passengers in Houmt Souk, Djerba’s main town, or at the island’s louage station nearby. From Houmt Souk, taxis reach the main beach hotel zones (Zone Touristique) in 10-20 minutes, with fares around 10-15 TND.
If you are arriving at Djerba-Zarzis Airport, note that the airport is on the southeastern end of the island and is not well served by louage. An airport taxi or pre-booked transfer is the practical option from the airport itself.

An alternative via Sfax
Some travellers take Tunis → Sfax by louage (3h30), then Sfax → Gabes (1h30), then Gabes → Djerba (1h15-1h30). This adds an extra leg and more waiting time but can be useful if the direct Moncef Bey–Gabes vehicle is full or slow to depart. It is rarely faster and is only worth considering if you hit a particularly bad wait at Moncef Bey.
Tips for foreign travellers
Start early. Departing Moncef Bey by 8am-9am gives you comfortable buffer at the Gabes connection and ensures you arrive in Djerba with daylight to settle in.
Confirm “Gabes” not “Djerba” at Moncef Bey. The station does not run louages directly to Djerba. Ask for the vehicle to Gabes and make the connection there.
In Gabes, look for the Djerba bay. Gabes louage station is centrally located. Vehicles for Djerba (via Jorf ferry) are usually grouped in one section. Ask if unsure — French is understood.
Carry enough cash for both legs. You will need to pay two separate fares in cash. Bring small notes for each payment.
The ferry is included. You do not pay separately for the Jorf-Ajim ferry crossing when travelling by louage — the fare is included in what you paid in Gabes.
Alternative: domestic flight. Tunisair and other carriers run short domestic flights between Tunis-Carthage airport and Djerba-Zarzis airport in under an hour. If time is a constraint, the flight is by far the simpler option.
Is the louage the right choice for you?
The louage to Djerba makes sense if you are on a tight budget and have a full day to travel. The combined fare of 32-40 TND is significantly cheaper than a domestic flight or long-distance private transfer. The journey is an experience in itself — the southern landscape changes noticeably as you approach Gabes, and the ferry crossing is a small highlight.
If you have a limited time in Tunisia or are arriving with heavy luggage, the domestic flight or a private transfer is the better call. For those with a flexible schedule and an interest in travelling the way most Tunisians do, the two-leg louage route is entirely manageable.
