The louage from Kairouan to Sfax connects two of Tunisia’s most historically significant cities in a journey of around 1.5 to 2 hours. At approximately 16 TND per seat, it is far more economical than a private taxi on the same route. For travellers moving between the holy city and the commercial south — or using Sfax as a gateway to El Jem, Gabès, or the Kerkennah Islands — this route is a practical and affordable option.
The Kairouan–Sfax corridor passes through the flat agricultural heartland of central Tunisia. It is not a scenic journey, but it is efficient, and the connection is useful for any itinerary that includes both cities.
Station in Kairouan
Kairouan’s main louage station sits on the edge of the town centre. It is reachable from the medina by short taxi (3-4 TND) or on foot if your accommodation is nearby. Ask for the louage station or gare routière — drivers and locals know it.
At the station, look for vehicles displaying “Sfax” or ask a station worker or fellow passenger to point you toward the right bay. Kairouan’s station handles multiple routes simultaneously including Tunis, Sousse, Hammamet, and Sfax. The Sfax vehicles are typically in the section serving southern routes.
Note on connecting from Tunis: if you are arriving in Kairouan from Tunis and continuing to Sfax the same day, the most common approach is to catch a morning louage from Tunis to Kairouan (around 14-16 TND, 2h), spend a few hours in the city, then take the afternoon louage to Sfax. Allow time at the Kairouan station rather than rushing straight through.
Fares and payment
The standard fare from Kairouan to Sfax is approximately 16 TND per seat as of 2026. Cash only — no card readers and no advance booking. Have small notes ready. Confirm the fare at the booth or with the driver before settling in.
The fare is the same in both directions: Sfax to Kairouan is also around 16 TND.
Waiting times and frequency
The Kairouan–Sfax route is moderately busy. Morning services — especially between 8am and 11am — fill relatively quickly. Expect a wait of 20-40 minutes during peak morning hours.
Afternoon services are less frequent. From around 2pm onward, vehicles take longer to fill and you may wait 45-60 minutes. If you are planning to continue south from Sfax the same day (for example, to connect to El Jem or Gabès), a morning departure from Kairouan is strongly recommended.
The route also runs in reverse — Sfax to Kairouan — on the same schedule. Sfax is a busier city with a larger louage network, so departures from Sfax to Kairouan are generally more frequent than in the other direction.
The journey
The route from Kairouan to Sfax heads southeast through the central Tunisian steppe. The landscape is mostly flat agricultural terrain: olive groves, grain fields, and low scrubland. The road quality is good and the journey is straightforward.
Journey time is 1.5 to 2 hours. Occasional brief pauses at roadside stops are at the driver’s discretion but not routine on this route.
Bring water for the journey, particularly in summer. The olive-growing region around Sfax can be hot in July and August, and the vehicles are not always air-conditioned.
Arriving in Sfax
The louage drops you at Sfax’s main station, west of the railway station near the southwestern edge of the old medina. Taxis wait outside and the fare to most central hotels or the port is 3-5 TND.
Sfax is Tunisia’s second-largest city and often bypassed by tourists, which is precisely what makes it worth a visit. The medina here is one of the best-preserved in the country — less touristy than Tunis and genuinely still functioning as a commercial heart of the city. The Dar Jellouli Museum inside the medina houses a strong collection of traditional costumes and regional artefacts. Sfax is also the departure point for ferries to the Kerkennah Islands, a flat, low-key archipelago popular with Tunisian families for its beaches and seafood.

Onward connections from Sfax
Sfax is one of the largest louage hubs in Tunisia. From the same station, you can connect to:
| Destination | Fare | Journey time |
|---|---|---|
| El Jem (northbound) | 6–7 TND | ~40 min |
| Gabès (southbound) | 10–12 TND | ~1h30 |
| Sousse (northbound) | 10–12 TND | ~1h30 |
| Tunis (northbound) | 18–22 TND | ~3h30 |
| Tataouine (via Gabès) | change in Gabès | ~3h+ |
For a visit to El Jem, the short louage north from Sfax is the most efficient approach. The colosseum at El Jem is one of Tunisia’s most visited sites and the journey from Sfax takes only 40 minutes at around 6-7 TND. See the Louage Sfax–El Jem guide for details.
For the Kerkennah Islands, the ferry departs from Sfax port (around 2 TND, roughly 30 minutes). A short taxi from the louage station to the port costs 4-6 TND.
Kairouan: what to see before you leave
If you have a few hours in Kairouan between arriving and taking the louage south, the main sites are compact and walkable from the medina.
The Great Mosque of Kairouan (Mosque of Uqba) is one of the oldest mosques in the world and the most important Islamic monument in North Africa. Non-Muslims can visit the courtyard and certain areas; entry fee is approximately 8 TND (as of 2026). The Medina of Kairouan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the covered markets, zaouias, and traditional carpet workshops inside are worth exploring at a slow pace. The Aghlabid Basins on the edge of the medina are ancient reservoir cisterns dating from the 9th century and free to walk around.

Tips for the journey
Kairouan to Sfax is not a tourist-facing route. Unlike Tunis–Hammamet or Tunis–Sousse, this is a route used primarily by locals for work and commerce. The experience is functional: you will be one of very few foreign travellers. Have your destination written in Arabic or French if you are uncertain about communication.
Allow time in Kairouan first. The city warrants at least 3-4 hours for the mosque, medina, and basins. Combining a morning in Kairouan with an afternoon louage to Sfax is a rewarding itinerary day.
Confirm you are in the Sfax vehicle. At a multi-route station, taking a moment to double-check the destination before boarding avoids the awkward situation of being halfway to Sousse before realising the mistake.
The route is also a useful standalone day trip. From Sfax, Kairouan is a feasible day trip: an early morning louage, a few hours in the holy city, and an afternoon return. The 16 TND fare in each direction is very reasonable for what is an exceptional cultural site.
