The louage from Tunis to Tabarka is the most practical and affordable way to reach Tunisiaâs northwestern coast. It covers around 180 kilometres in 2 to 2.5 hours for approximately 15 TND per seat - a fraction of the cost of a private taxi. For travellers heading to Tabarkaâs coral diving sites, the Genoese fort, the Ain Draham cork forests, or the nearby Algerian border region, the louage is the standard local option.
Tabarka is less visited than Sousse or Hammamet, which also means the louage service is less frequent. Getting the timing right makes a significant difference on this route.
The right station: Bab Saadoun
All louages from Tunis to Tabarka depart from Bab Saadoun station, the capitalâs northern and northwestern terminal. It is located in northern Tunis, reachable from the city centre by taxi (5-7 TND) or by local bus. Bab Saadoun covers all routes toward Bizerte, Jendouba, Tabarka, BĂ©ja, and Algeria.
Do not go to Moncef Bey, which serves Sousse, Kairouan, Sfax, and all southern routes. Do not go to Bab Alioua, which covers the Cap Bon peninsula. Arriving at the wrong station means a 20-minute cross-town taxi ride and potentially missing the morning departures.
At Bab Saadoun, look for signs or ask a station worker to direct you to the Tabarka vehicles. The name âTabarkaâ is understood immediately; French is spoken at most booths.
Fares and payment
The standard fare from Tunis to Tabarka is approximately 15 TND per seat as of 2026. This is a fixed fare. Cash only - no card payment and no online ticketing. Have small-denomination notes ready before boarding. Fares may occasionally be posted at the booth; if not, confirm the price before sitting down.
There is no reservation system. You pay on the day and take your seat once the vehicle begins to fill.
Timing and waiting
The TunisâTabarka route is active but not as busy as the main southbound or Cap Bon routes. Services run through the morning with fewer afternoon options.
Best window: arrive at Bab Saadoun between 7am and 9am. Vehicles typically fill within 20-40 minutes at that hour. If you arrive at the station by 8am, you can reasonably expect to be on the road before 9am and in Tabarka by late morning.
Afternoon services: after noon, departures thin out significantly. Waiting 60-90 minutes for a vehicle to fill is common. For afternoon travel, the bus from Tunis (SNTRI or regional services) may be more reliable for a fixed departure time.
Day-trippers note: Tabarka is feasible as a day trip from Tunis but the round trip is tight. If you plan to visit Ain Draham or the Tabarka beach area as well, an overnight stay gives you far more flexibility.
The route
From Bab Saadoun, the louage heads northwest on the main road through Tébourba, then continues toward Béja and Jendouba before turning north toward Tabarka and the coast. The landscape changes noticeably on this route: the agricultural plains near Tunis give way to forested hills in the northwest, one of the greenest parts of Tunisia.
There are no fixed stops, though on some services the driver may pause briefly in a town along the way. Journey time is 2 to 2.5 hours. Bring water, particularly in summer - the vehicle is not always air-conditioned and the forested roads can be warm in July and August.
Arriving in Tabarka
The louage drops you at Tabarkaâs station near the town centre. The main beach, the Genoese fort, and the coral diving marina are all reachable on foot or by short taxi from the station.
Tabarka is a small resort town with a relaxed atmosphere. The highlight is the marine environment: the waters around the Les Aiguilles needle rocks off the coast are among the best coral diving sites in Tunisia. The old Genoese fort on the rocky promontory east of the port is free to enter and offers excellent views. For nature, the forested hillside town of Ain Draham, around 30 kilometres south by taxi, is worth a half-day if you have an overnight stay in Tabarka.

Onward from Tabarka
Tabarka is a regional endpoint rather than a transit hub. Most travellers arrive, spend one or two nights, then return to Tunis or continue toward Algeria. A few connections worth knowing:
| Destination | Option | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| Ain Draham | Shared taxi or local bus | ~30â40 min |
| Jendouba | Louage or shared taxi | ~1h |
| Béja | Louage via Jendouba | ~1h30 |
| Tunis (return) | Louage from town station | ~2â2.5h |
For Ain Draham, shared taxis wait near the Tabarka station and run regularly through the morning. The journey through the cork oak forests is scenic and the town itself has a cooler climate useful in summer.
Louage vs alternatives
| Louage | Bus (SNTRI/regional) | Private transfer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| TunisâTabarka fare | ~15 TND | ~12â18 TND | 120â160 TND |
| Departure | When full | Fixed timetable | Pre-agreed time |
| Journey time | ~2â2.5h | ~2.5â3h | ~2h |
| Best for | Budget, flexible | Fixed schedule | Groups, luggage |
The louage is the fastest and cheapest option when you can travel in the morning. The bus is a reasonable alternative if you need a fixed departure time, particularly for afternoon travel. For groups of three or four, a private transfer in Tunisia splits the cost to a reasonable level and offers door-to-door service.

Tips for the journey
Travel light. Louage boot space is limited. If you are staying overnight in Tabarka, a small bag is manageable; large suitcases can be awkward and may require you to pay for an extra seat.
Morning is non-negotiable on this route. Unlike TunisâSousse, which has frequent services all day, TunisâTabarka thins out noticeably after noon. Plan your day accordingly.
Combine with Ain Draham. Most visitors to Tabarka who have more than a few hours make the short trip to Ain Draham for the cedar forests and cooler air. Shared taxis run frequently and the route is straightforward.
Return planning. Louages back to Tunis depart from the same station area in Tabarka. For a reliable morning return, aim to be at the station by 8am. If your hotel can arrange an early call, it is worth it.
Carry small notes. Fares on the louage network are always cash. Have 20 TND in small denominations ready before you board.
