Louage from Gabès: All Routes, Fares & Station Guide

Palm groves of the Gabès oasis with the Mediterranean coast beyond

Gabès is the most important louage junction in southern Tunisia. Almost every traveller heading into the deep south — Djerba, Matmata, Tataouine, the Saharan edge — passes through it. The city sits at the point where the main coastal corridor from Tunis meets the road network that fans out toward the desert, the Kerkennah coast, and the Jorf–Ajim ferry crossing to Djerba. Understanding the Gabès louage station and the routes it serves is essential for independent travel in this part of the country.

The Gabès louage station

The main louage station in Gabès is located near Avenue Habib Bourguiba, the city’s central commercial street. It is within walking distance of most hotels in the town centre and reachable by taxi from the train station (3-5 TND).

The station handles a large number of simultaneous routes. On arrival, look for bay signs or ask a station worker to direct you to the right vehicle — the French word louage is universally understood, and the destination name alone is enough to be pointed in the right direction. The Djerba, Matmata, Tataouine, and Sfax sections are generally grouped separately within the station complex.

If you are arriving in Gabès from Tunis or Sfax, your louage will typically drop you at or near the same station. Give yourself 15-30 minutes to locate the onward vehicle, especially if connecting to a destination with less frequent service (Matmata, Médenine).

Gabès to Djerba

The Gabès–Djerba route is one of the most travelled in the south. Vehicles depart regularly through the morning from the Gabès station. The route heads east toward the coast and then south along the road to the Jorf–Ajim ferry crossing. The Jorf–Ajim ferry takes around 15 minutes and connects the mainland to Djerba — foot passengers ride free; if the louage driver loads the vehicle onto the ferry, the crossing cost is typically included in the fare.

After the crossing at Ajim, the vehicle continues to Houmt Souk, Djerba’s main town. Total journey time from Gabès is around 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 minutes. This is significantly cheaper and often faster than taking a louage from Tunis to Djerba as a single trip.

Timing note: most Gabès–Djerba vehicles depart in the morning. If you are arriving in Gabès from Tunis in the afternoon, there may be fewer options — check with the station on arrival rather than assuming a vehicle will be waiting.

Gabès to Matmata

The louage to Matmata departs from the Gabès station and takes around 45 minutes, climbing from the coastal plain onto the rocky plateau where Matmata’s troglodyte cave dwellings are built. Fare is 5-7 TND per seat.

This route runs reliably through the morning but becomes uncertain after 2pm. If you are visiting Matmata as a day trip from Gabès, leave before 10am and aim to return by mid-afternoon. A taxi from Matmata to Gabès costs approximately 30-40 TND if you miss the last louage — expensive but available.

For travellers connecting from Tunis on the same day, a morning departure from Moncef Bey (Tunis) gets you to Gabès by noon, allowing the Matmata connection. Do not leave Tunis after 9am if you intend to reach Matmata the same day.

Full details are in the Louage Gabès–Matmata guide.

Gabès to Tataouine

Tataouine is around 130 kilometres southeast of Gabès and is the gateway to the ksour villages — the fortified Berber granaries of Ksar Ouled Soltane, Ksar Hadada, and others. The louage fare is approximately 10-14 TND and the journey takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, typically via Médenine.

Services run through the morning from the Gabès station. This route is less frequent than the Djerba or Sfax connections — vehicles may take 20-40 minutes to fill in mid-morning. Plan to leave before 11am to reach Tataouine in time for the afternoon. Return vehicles from Tataouine back to Gabès also run through the morning and thin out by early afternoon.

Tataouine is also the staging point for day trips to Chenini and the desert ksar circuit. If you are planning to explore this area over multiple days, overnight accommodation is available in Tataouine — limited but functional. The medina and market are worth a morning, and a local taxi can reach several ksour for around 40-60 TND for the circuit.

Gabès to Médenine

Médenine, around 75 kilometres southeast, is a smaller city with its own louage station connecting to Tataouine, Djerba, Zarzis, and the border region. Fare from Gabès is approximately 8-10 TND, journey time around 1 hour. Médenine itself is primarily a transport junction — most travellers pass through to continue to Tataouine or the ksour — but the partially restored ksar in the centre of town is an interesting stop.

Gabès northbound: Sfax and Tunis

For northbound travel from Gabès, the main route is to Sfax — approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and 10-12 TND. From Sfax you can connect directly to El Jem, Kairouan, Sousse, Monastir, or Tunis. Most long-distance northbound louages from Gabès go via Sfax, so if you are heading directly to Tunis, expect a Sfax connection rather than a direct vehicle (though direct Tunis–Gabès vehicles do run from Moncef Bey in the morning).

The Louage Tunis–Gabès guide covers the northbound direction in full.

Timing advice for Gabès connections

Gabès sits at the intersection of several routes, which means timing matters more here than on straightforward point-to-point journeys. The key rules:

Morning travel is the default. All routes out of Gabès — Djerba, Matmata, Tataouine, Médenine — are best served in the morning. Services to Matmata and Médenine thin out significantly after 1pm; the Djerba service runs longer but morning is more reliable.

Allow connection time. If you are arriving from Tunis and connecting onward to Matmata or Djerba the same day, the Tunis louage takes 3h30-4h. Leaving Tunis before 7am puts you in Gabès before 11am — comfortably within the morning service window for onward connections.

Afternoon arrivals in Gabès are fine for Djerba. The Djerba route runs into the early afternoon. If you arrive in Gabès at 1pm, a vehicle to Djerba is usually still findable. Matmata and Tataouine are more uncertain at that hour.

Gabès as a base

Most travellers treat Gabès as a transit hub rather than a destination. That said, the Gabès oasis is one of the few places in Tunisia where a large agricultural oasis meets the coast — the combination of palm groves, market gardens, and the sea is unusual and pleasant for a half-day walk. The medina and the old city centre are compact and walkable.

If you arrive in Gabès in the early afternoon after a long journey from Tunis and plan to continue south the next morning, spending the night here is practical. Accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses around 40-60 TND to midrange options near the town centre.

Tips for the station

Confirm fare before boarding. Gabès station handles many routes and prices vary considerably. Always confirm the destination and fare before sitting down.

Small notes. Drivers at Gabès rarely carry change for 50 TND notes. Have 10s and 20s available.

English is limited. French is the working language at the station. “Matmata”, “Djerba”, “Tataouine” are understood as single words — no further explanation needed.

Don’t rush. If you have time and are heading somewhere with infrequent service (Matmata, Médenine), arrive at the station early. Waiting for the vehicle to fill is normal. Bring water, especially in summer.
