Mahdia combines two things that are rare in Tunisia: an authentic, walkable old medina set on a dramatic sea-facing peninsula, and a relaxed beach resort zone just outside it. The medina — entered through the narrow Skifa el-Kahla (Dark Gate), a massive 10th-century Fatimid gatehouse — contains a working fishing port, a small traditional souk, and the Grand Mosque of Mahdia, one of Tunisia’s oldest. The resort hotels sit a few kilometres north along the coast, separated from the old town by a low-density corridor.
This separation is part of what makes Mahdia work well as a destination: those staying in the resort zone can easily reach the medina (10 minutes by taxi), while those staying in or near the medina get genuine Tunisian coastal life on their doorstep.

Mahdia has a number of smaller guesthouses, apartments, and 2-3 star properties in and around the medina. These are significantly cheaper than the resort hotels and give access to the fishing port atmosphere and traditional town life.

Kitesurfing in Mahdia
Mahdia has become one of Tunisia’s best-known kitesurfing destinations. The consistent sea breeze, wide sandy beach, and relatively calm water make it attractive for intermediate and advanced kite surfers. Several kitesurfing schools operate along the beach during the season (April–October). Some hotels in the resort zone work with local kitesurfing operators — check at your hotel on arrival for current school recommendations.
What to see in Mahdia
Skifa el-Kahla (Dark Gate) — the 10th-century Fatimid gatehouse that marks the entrance to the medina. Its narrow arched passage and thick walls (up to 10 metres deep) give an immediate sense of the old town’s fortified character.
Grand Mosque of Mahdia — founded by the Fatimid caliph Ubayd Allah al-Mahdi in 921 AD, making it one of the earliest mosques in Tunisia. The exterior is plain by Tunisian mosque standards; interior access is restricted to Muslim visitors.
Mahdia Fishing Port — the working port adjacent to the medina. The best time to visit is early morning when the fishing boats return with the day’s catch. Fresh fish is sold directly from the boats and at the nearby souk.
Borj el-Kebir (Great Fort) — an Ottoman-era fortress on the northern tip of the Mahdia peninsula. Entry approximately 5 TND. The views from the walls across the Mediterranean and back toward the medina are the main reward.
Practical notes
- Getting to the medina from resort hotels: A taxi between the resort zone and the medina runs approximately 10–15 TND as of 2026. Most resorts can arrange transport; taxis are also available on the main road.
- Train service: Mahdia has a train station with connections to Monastir and Tunis via the Sahel rail line — useful for day trips to Monastir (30 minutes) or Sousse (1.5 hours).
- Kitesurfing season: April to October; best winds in spring and autumn.
