Tunisia Sahara Desert Tour: 3-Day Itinerary from Tozeur
This three-day itinerary starts and ends in Tozeur and covers the most distinctive landscapes in southern Tunisia: the mountain oases along the Algerian border, the vast Chott el Jerid salt lake, the Saharan dunes at Douz, the troglodyte homes of Matmata (used as film locations for Star Wars), and the fortified granary of Ksar Ouled Soltane. It is the most efficient way to see the Tunisian south without backtracking.
All prices listed are approximate as of 2026. For broader trip planning, see our 1 week Tunisia itinerary or 10 days in Tunisia.
Before You Go: Logistics
Getting to Tozeur
- By air: Tunisair Express flies Tunis–Tozeur seasonally, approximately 150–250 TND one way. Tozeur-Nefta International Airport (TOE) is 4 km from the town centre — taxi approximately 5–8 TND.
- By louage: From Tunis Bab Aleoua station, approximately 30–35 TND, 6–7 hours. From Sousse, approximately 25–35 TND, 4–5 hours via Gafsa.
- By hire car: Approximately 5 hours from Tunis via the A3. A hire car is useful for Days 1 and 3 but not essential — organised tours cover all three days.
Tour Options
You can do this itinerary three ways:
-
Organised 4x4 tour (recommended for most travellers): Book through your hotel or a Tozeur-based operator. A 3-day circuit covering all stops listed here costs approximately 400–700 TND per person (2-person minimum) including transport, guide, desert camp overnight, and most meals. Operators include Tozeur Aventures and Sahara Expéditions — both have offices on Avenue Habib Bourguiba.
-
Hire car + self-drive: Practical for Days 1 and 3, but Day 2 requires 4x4 tracks near Douz. A standard hire car can reach Douz town but not the desert camp sites. Consider hiring a 4x4 from Tozeur (approximately 250–400 TND per day as of 2026).
-
Mix: Self-drive Days 1 and 3, book a Day 2 excursion from Douz for the camel trek and camp (approximately 150–300 TND per person).
What to Pack
- 2–3 litres of water per person per day (more in summer)
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat
- A warm layer for desert nights (temperatures can drop below 10°C even in spring)
- Comfortable walking shoes with grip (the oases involve rocky paths)
- Cash in TND — ATMs in Tozeur and Douz exist but can be unreliable; there are none in Matmata or at Ksar Ouled Soltane
Day 1: Tozeur — Chebika, Tamerza and Mides Mountain Oases
Morning — Chebika
Leave Tozeur early (07:30–08:00) to beat the heat. Chebika is approximately 60 km northwest of Tozeur, roughly 1 hour by road. This mountain oasis sits at the base of a canyon in the Djebel El Negueb range. A paved walking path (approximately 20 minutes each way) leads from the car park past the abandoned old village to a natural waterfall and palm-shaded pool.
- Entry: free (local guides offer their services for approximately 10–20 TND — not required but they know the best viewpoints)
- Time needed: 45 minutes to 1 hour
The old village of Chebika was abandoned after devastating floods in 1969. The ruins remain — mud-brick houses built directly into the rock face. The contrast between the arid canyon walls and the green oasis below is striking.
Mid-morning — Tamerza
Continue 15 km west to Tamerza — Tunisia’s largest mountain oasis. The abandoned village here is larger than Chebika’s and sits on a ridge overlooking a deep gorge with a seasonal waterfall. During and after the rainy season (November–March), the waterfall runs with enough force to be genuinely impressive.
- Entry: free
- Time needed: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Walk through the abandoned village first, then follow the path down to the canyon floor for the waterfall viewpoint. The Tamerza Palace hotel on the ridge above offers terrace drinks with a panoramic view of the gorge (coffee approximately 5–8 TND).
Lunch: Tamerza Palace restaurant — Tunisian dishes and grilled meats with canyon views, approximately 25–45 TND per person. Alternatively, most tour operators provide a packed lunch.
Afternoon — Mides
Continue 15 km further west to Mides, the third and most remote of the mountain oases. Mides sits directly on the Algerian border and overlooks a deep, narrow canyon — the “Grand Canyon of Tunisia.” The abandoned village here is the most photogenic of the three, with ruined houses perched on the canyon rim.
- Entry: free
- Time needed: 30–45 minutes
The road to Mides is partially unpaved for the final 5 km — passable in a regular car in dry conditions but a 4x4 is more comfortable. During or after rain, 4x4 only.
Evening — Return to Tozeur
Return to Tozeur by late afternoon (approximately 1.5 hours from Mides). Spend the evening walking through the Ouled El Hadef old quarter — the yellow geometric brickwork is unique to Tozeur and looks its best in golden-hour light.
Dinner: Restaurant Le Soleil in the town centre — couscous, brik (fried pastry with egg), and grilled lamb. Main courses approximately 15–30 TND per person.
Day 1 accommodation (Tozeur)
| Tier | Hotel | Price per night |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Résidence Warda | from 50 TND (16 USD) |
| Mid-range | Dar Horchani | from 160 TND (51 USD) |
| Luxury | Anantara Tozeur Resort | from 600 TND (190 USD) |
Day 2: Chott el Jerid, Douz and Desert Camp
Morning — Chott el Jerid Crossing
Leave Tozeur heading east across the Chott el Jerid — a vast salt lake covering approximately 7,000 km², the largest in the Sahara. The crossing follows a single causeway road (GP16) for approximately 80 km and takes about 1 hour.
The surface shifts between blinding white salt crusts, shallow pools of turquoise water, and mirage effects that make the horizon disappear entirely. Stop at the roadside stalls midway across — locals sell salt crystals and “desert roses” (gypsum formations) for approximately 3–10 TND each. The salt formations at the lake edges are worth photographing.
Late Morning — Douz
Continue to Douz — the “Gateway to the Sahara” — approximately 30 minutes beyond the eastern shore of the Chott. Douz is the last proper town before the Grand Erg Oriental desert and the traditional starting point for camel treks into the dunes.
Visit the Sahara Museum (Musée du Sahara) in the town centre for context on nomadic Berber culture, traditional desert agriculture, and the ecology of the Saharan fringe.
- Sahara Museum entry: approximately 5 TND
- Hours: 09:00–16:00 (closed Fridays)
Lunch: Restaurant Ali Baba on the main road — traditional Tunisian and Saharan dishes (try the camel stew) from approximately 15–25 TND per person.
Afternoon — Camel Trek
Book a camel trek into the dunes departing at approximately 15:00–16:00. Treks range from 1 hour to overnight:
- 1-hour sunset trek: approximately 40–60 TND per person
- 2-hour trek with tea in the dunes: approximately 60–100 TND per person
- Overnight trek with desert camp: approximately 150–300 TND per person including dinner, camp, and breakfast
For this itinerary, the overnight option is the most rewarding. Camels walk approximately 1–2 hours into the dunes to reach a fixed camp site. The ride is slow-paced and suitable for beginners — guides lead the camels by rope.
Evening — Desert Camp
Arrive at camp before sunset. Established camps near Douz use Berber-style tents with mattresses and blankets on the sand. Shared bathroom facilities (basic) are available. The sunset and night sky views are the highlight — light pollution is essentially zero.
Dinner: Provided at camp — typically mechouia (grilled pepper and tomato salad), couscous with lamb, flatbread, and mint tea. Quality varies by operator but is generally hearty and sufficient.
After dinner, many camps offer drumming and traditional music around a fire.
Day 3: Matmata, Ksar Ouled Soltane and Return via Gabès
Early Morning — Camp to Douz
Wake for sunrise over the dunes — this alone justifies the overnight stay. After breakfast at camp, ride or drive back to Douz by approximately 08:00–09:00.
Morning — Matmata
Drive from Douz to Matmata — approximately 130 km southeast, roughly 2 hours on paved roads. Matmata is famous for its troglodyte homes — underground dwellings carved into the soft sandstone, used by Berber families for centuries as insulation against extreme desert heat. Several are still inhabited.
The town gained worldwide recognition as a filming location for Star Wars. The Hôtel Sidi Driss was used as Luke Skywalker’s childhood home (the Lars homestead) in the original 1977 film and again in Attack of the Clones (2002). Some of the original set decorations remain.
- Hôtel Sidi Driss visit: approximately 5 TND (you can also stay overnight — rooms from approximately 60 TND, though facilities are basic)
- Other troglodyte homes: Several families allow visits for approximately 3–5 TND. Your guide or a local will point these out.
- Matmata Museum of Heritage: approximately 3 TND entry, covering traditional Berber domestic life
Spend 1.5–2 hours in Matmata. The underground homes maintain a constant temperature of approximately 18–22°C — a welcome relief in summer.
Lunch: Restaurant Les Berbères in Matmata — tajine, couscous, and grilled meats in a troglodyte setting from approximately 15–30 TND per person.
Afternoon — Ksar Ouled Soltane
Drive southeast from Matmata to Ksar Ouled Soltane — approximately 85 km, roughly 1.5 hours. This is one of the best-preserved ksour (fortified granaries) in Tunisia. The four-storey structure consists of hundreds of ghorfas — vaulted storage cells — arranged around a central courtyard. It was used as another Star Wars filming location (Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace).
- Entry: approximately 5 TND
- Hours: daylight hours (no fixed schedule — a caretaker opens the gate)
The ksar is photogenic from every angle. The late-afternoon light catching the honey-coloured walls is particularly good. Allow 30–45 minutes.
Late Afternoon — Return via Gabès
From Ksar Ouled Soltane, drive north to Gabès — approximately 100 km, 1.5 hours. Gabès is a coastal city with a unique oasis that reaches the Mediterranean — the only seaside oasis in the region. If time allows, stop at the Chenini Oasis on the outskirts of Gabès (free entry, 30 minutes).
From Gabès, you have three options:
- Return to Tozeur: louage approximately 15–20 TND, 3 hours. Or drive approximately 200 km (2.5 hours).
- Continue to Djerba: louage approximately 5–8 TND, 1.5 hours. A good option if continuing to Djerba for the next stage of your trip.
- Head north to Sfax or Sousse: louage to Sfax approximately 8–12 TND (2 hours), then onward connections north.

Practical Notes
- Heat: Summer daytime temperatures in the Saharan south regularly exceed 45°C. If travelling June–August, start each day before 07:00, rest during the hottest hours (12:00–15:00), and carry extra water. The mountain oases on Day 1 offer more shade than the open desert on Day 2.
- Photography: The Chott el Jerid salt lake and Douz dunes produce intense glare. Polarising filters make a significant difference. Protect camera gear from fine sand — it gets into everything.
- Star Wars locations: Beyond Matmata and Ksar Ouled Soltane, other filming locations (Mos Espa near Tozeur, the Sidi Bouhlel canyon) are accessible with a 4x4 and local guide but are not included in this 3-day route. See our Star Wars filming locations guide for the full map. Ask your tour operator about adding them.
- Fuel: Fill up in Tozeur before Day 1 and in Douz before Day 3. Fuel stations in smaller towns can be unreliable. Fuel costs approximately 2.5–3 TND per litre as of 2026.
- Mobile signal: Coverage is strong in Tozeur and Douz but patchy to non-existent in the mountain oases and desert camp areas. An Airalo eSIM works on the Ooredoo and Tunisie Telecom networks.
