Tunisia in July: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect

Mediterranean sunset over the sea, Tunisia in July

Tunisia spans from the Mediterranean coast in the north to the Sahara Desert in the south — conditions in July vary significantly depending on which part of the country you’re visiting. July is the peak of summer: the coast is at maximum capacity, the Sahara is dangerously hot, and the country runs on a beach-and-evening rhythm.

Weather in July

Northern Tunisia (Tunis, Hammamet, Sousse) averages 32-35°C. Coastal areas benefit from Mediterranean breezes, but inland the heat is relentless. Humidity is moderate — not tropical, but sticky enough that air conditioning is essential for sleep.

Central Tunisia is extremely hot: Kairouan and El Jem regularly exceed 38°C. Visiting the El Jem amphitheatre or Dougga at midday is genuinely unpleasant — exposed stone amplifies the heat.

The Sahara is off-limits: Tozeur and Douz hit 45-50°C. Even locals restrict outdoor activity to early morning and late evening. Do not plan Sahara excursions in July.

Sea temperatures reach 25-27°C — warm, calm, and ideal for swimming. The Mediterranean is at its most inviting.

Festivals and Events

Carthage International Festival (Festival International de Carthage). This is Tunisia’s premier cultural event, running from mid-July through mid-August. Performances take place in the ancient Roman amphitheatre at Carthage — international and Arab musicians, dancers, and theatre companies perform under the stars. The setting is extraordinary. Tickets sell out for headline acts, so book in advance.

Hammamet International Festival. Running in parallel with Carthage, the Hammamet festival stages performances in the open-air theatre within the Hammamet kasbah. The programme mixes international artists with Tunisian musicians and theatre.

Tunisian school holidays are in full effect through July. Domestic tourism peaks alongside European visitors, creating the busiest month of the year at coastal resorts.

Where to Go in July

Beach resorts. July is exclusively a beach month in Tunisia. Hammamet, Port el Kantaoui, Sousse, and Djerba are at full capacity — pools, beach clubs, water sports, boat trips, and evening entertainment. The all-inclusive resort infrastructure is geared for this month.

Djerba. Djerba benefits from sea breezes that moderate the worst of the heat. The island’s beaches are less developed than Hammamet’s resort strip, offering a marginally quieter beach experience even in peak season. Houmt Souk’s evening fish market and restaurants are excellent.

Carthage and Tunis evenings. If you combine a beach holiday with a few cultural evenings, the Carthage International Festival justifies a trip to the capital. Tunis evenings are warm and lively — the Tunis medina’s covered souks are cooler than open streets, and rooftop restaurants provide breezy dining.

Sidi Bou Said at sunset. Sidi Bou Said is crowded in July but the sunset views remain spectacular. Visit after 6pm when temperatures drop and the light turns golden over the Gulf of Tunis.

Costs and Crowds

July is the most expensive month for Tunisia’s coast. European package tourism (France, Germany, UK, Eastern Europe) peaks alongside Tunisian domestic holidays. Hotels at Hammamet, Djerba, and Sousse charge maximum rates, and many properties are fully booked. Reserve well in advance — last-minute availability at coastal resorts is limited.

Inland cities are marginally affected. Tunis hotel prices rise during the Carthage Festival period but remain far below coastal resort rates. Kairouan and other interior cities see minimal tourism in July due to the heat.

Flights are at peak frequency and price. Charter operations from Europe are at maximum capacity. Domestic flights between Tunis and Djerba run multiple times daily.
