Ain Draham is unlike anywhere else in Tunisia. At 800 metres in the Khroumirie mountain range, it sits in a dense cork oak forest — the red-roofed houses and cool, misty mornings feel more like the French Pyrenees than the Tunisia most visitors imagine. In summer, when Tunis and the coast bake at 38°C, Ain Draham sits at 25°C under tree cover. In February, it sometimes snows.
The town is small — a main street, a few restaurants, a weekly market — and functions mainly as a Tunisian domestic escape. International visitors who make the effort are rewarded with genuine mountain quiet, long forest walks, and the novelty of seeing a completely different Tunisia that sits within two hours of Tunis.
Accommodation options are more limited than coastal resorts but consistently good value, and several properties have invested in mountain-specific facilities: indoor pools (useful in the cooler months), fireplaces, and guided forest excursions.

Day trips from Ain Draham
Tabarka (33 km, 40 minutes) — a coastal town on the northwest coast with a good beach, a Genoese fort on the offshore rock, and the recently restored Tabarka golf course. It is the most popular day trip from Ain Draham. The road between Ain Draham and Tabarka through the Khroumirie forest is itself one of the most scenic drives in Tunisia. Bulla Regia (45 km) — a Roman city near Jendouba with a remarkable feature: rooms built underground to escape the summer heat, their floors decorated with exceptional mosaics that were preserved by burial. Entry approximately 10 TND. One of the most interesting Roman sites in Tunisia.
Ichkeul National Park (90 km) — a UNESCO World Heritage biosphere reserve around Lake Ichkeul, an important wintering ground for migratory waterbirds from Europe. The best time for birdwatching is November to March. Combined with Bizerte (20 km from Ichkeul), it makes a full day.
Ain Draham Forest Walks — the town’s immediate surroundings have unmarked trails through the cork oak forest. The circuit around the Djebel Bir mountain (1,014 m) offers sweeping views over the hills toward Algeria. A local guide is recommended for longer hikes; ask at your hotel.
Practical notes
- Climate: Bring layers even in summer — evenings at altitude can be cool (15-18°C). In winter, proper warm clothing is needed; snow is possible December-February.
- Car: Ain Draham is most usefully visited by car. The forest roads are part of the experience and public transport connections are infrequent.
- Market day: The weekly souk in Ain Draham is on Thursdays — the best day to see the town at its most active with local produce, crafts, and livestock.
- Hunting season: October to February is boar-hunting season; the forests have more activity (hunters, dogs) during these months. It does not affect visitor safety but changes the atmosphere of the walks.
