Tabarka sits in northwestern Tunisia, where the hills meet the Mediterranean coast near the Algerian border. It is the least resort-driven of Tunisia’s main coastal towns - smaller in scale, with a proper harbour, a 16th-century Genoese fort on a rocky promontory, and some of the country’s best diving and snorkelling just offshore. Beach strip (east of town)

The beach resort area lies east of the town centre along a sandy bay backed by pine trees. It is a quieter, less commercialised version of the Hammamet or Sousse resort strips - fewer hotels, less traffic, and more natural surroundings. The beach is wide and sandy, the sea is generally clear, and most hotels have pools and direct beach access.

Proximity to dive centres

If diving or snorkelling is a priority, staying in the town centre puts you closest to the dive operators and allows early morning departures without taxi fares. The beach resort hotels are generally more comfortable but involve a 15–20 minute walk or taxi ride into town.

Cork forest hiking

The hills behind Tabarka are covered in cork oak forest - one of the only areas in Tunisia with this kind of landscape. Several walking trails are accessible from the town outskirts. Spring (April–May) is the best season for hiking, with wildflowers and cooler temperatures.

Getting to Tabarka

• From Tunis by car: approximately 175 km, 2 to 2.5 hours via the A4 motorway towards Béja, then northwest on the P17. Car hire in Tunisia is the most flexible option for this route.
• From Tunis by louage: louages depart from Bab Saadoun station in Tunis to Tabarka, taking approximately 2.5–3 hours. Cost approximately 12–18 TND per person as of 2026.
• Tabarka Aïn Draham Airport: a small regional airport serves Tabarka seasonally with European charter flights, primarily in summer. Check airline schedules for the current season.
