A proper Sahara 4x4 tour is one of the best things to do in Tunisia. The routes south of Douz and around Tozeur put you into full desert terrain within minutes of leaving tarmac — real dune fields, dry riverbeds, ancient ksour, and the kind of silence that is impossible to find anywhere near the coast.
This page covers what is available, who runs it, what it costs, and what you need to know before booking from each of the three main departure points: Douz, Tozeur, and Matmata.
Departure points: Douz vs Tozeur vs Matmata
Douz is the most important 4x4 hub in Tunisia. The town sits directly on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental — the largest continuous sand sea in the country — and has been outfitting desert expeditions for decades. The local operators are experienced, the dune terrain is dramatic, and multi-day camping routes are well established. If the Sahara is your primary reason for coming south, Douz is the right base.
Tozeur is a larger town with an airport (TOE) and better overall infrastructure. It trades some of the raw dune scenery of Douz for variety: mountain oases at Chebika, Tamerza, and Mides; the Mos Espa Star Wars set; and Chott el-Djerid salt flat crossings. Most full-day tours from Tozeur cover around 200–250 km in a loop. The dunes here are at Ong Jmel (the camel’s neck), roughly 25 km northwest of town.
Matmata is known for its troglodyte architecture and Star Wars tours, but several operators also run half-day and full-day 4x4 excursions into the Dahar plateau and toward the Ksour region (Ksar Ouled Soltane, Ksar Hadada). These are more about rocky desert and historic fortified granaries than sand dunes.
1-day 4x4 tour options
Full-day from Douz (7–9 hours)
The standard full-day route from Douz goes deep into the Grand Erg Oriental, covering the dune fields east of town, a stop at one of the remote desert camps, and a late-afternoon return before sunset over the dunes. Some operators include a short camel section on foot.
What’s included: licensed 4x4 with driver-guide, shared vehicle (typically 4–6 passengers), water, a lunch stop at a desert camp, and sandboarding on the dunes. Fuel is always included.
What’s not included: travel insurance, personal snacks, gratuities for the driver (standard: 20–30 TND for a full day), and any camel ride extension (add approximately 30–50 TND per person for 45–60 minutes).
Named operators:
- Sahara Douz Tours — one of the longest-established agencies on Avenue des Martyrs in Douz. Runs both shared and private departures daily. Full-day shared tour from approximately 180 TND per person (as of 2026). Contact via their shopfront or WhatsApp booking.
- Desert Club Douz — operates the official licensed desert camp at Zaafrane, 12 km into the erg. Full-day tours depart at 8:00. From approximately 200 TND per person including lunch at the camp.
- 4x4 Grand Erg — newer agency with English-speaking guides. Private vehicle (4-seat Land Cruiser) from approximately 450 TND per day, driver included.
Full-day from Tozeur (8–10 hours)
The classic Tozeur circuit combines the mountain oases with the dunes in a single long day. The route typically goes: Tozeur → Chott el-Djerid → Chebika → Tamerza → Mides → Ong Jmel dunes → Mos Espa Star Wars set → Tozeur.
What’s included: 4x4 with driver, shared vehicle, entry to oasis sites (no formal fees, but driver handles any local charges), and usually lunch at a restaurant near Tamerza.
What’s not included: Tamerza Palace lunch upgrade (optional, approximately 45–60 TND extra), camel trek at the dunes (add 30–40 TND), personal travel insurance.
Named operators:
- Tozeur Aventure — runs daily shared departures at 7:30 from the central taxi rank area. From approximately 160–220 TND per person depending on group size.
- Tunisia Desert Tours — books through their town-centre office on Rue Ibn Khaldoun, Tozeur. Private full-day from approximately 500–600 TND per vehicle for up to 5 passengers.
- GetYourGuide-listed operators — several Tozeur-based agencies are listed on GetYourGuide with advance booking, English confirmation, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. These typically run 130–180 EUR per person for a full day.
Half-day from Matmata (4 hours)
Matmata 4x4 excursions focus on the plateau and ksour rather than dunes. A half-day takes you out to Ksar Ouled Soltane (a restored two-storey fortified granary with excellent cell architecture) and along piste tracks through the Dahar hills. Suitable if you are stopping in Matmata for a night and want more than the troglodyte houses.
From approximately 120–150 TND per vehicle (2–4 passengers) for a half-day.
2–3 day camping tours
Multi-day tours are the most rewarding way to experience the Tunisian Sahara. You leave the towns behind after day one and camp either in Bedouin-style desert tents at a permanent camp or under bivouac in the open erg.
What a typical 2-day tour looks like (departing Douz)
Day 1: Depart Douz mid-morning. Drive into the Grand Erg Oriental via Zaafrane, stopping at a sandstone ridge viewpoint. Afternoon: deep dune driving, optional sandboarding. Arrive at desert camp before sunset. Dinner prepared at camp (tagine or couscous). Night in desert tent.
Day 2: Sunrise in the dunes (this is genuinely excellent, not a cliché). Morning 4x4 circuit through the southern erg edge toward the Nefzaoua salt marshes. Return to Douz by early afternoon.
Cost (2-day): approximately 350–450 TND per person in a shared group of 4–6. Private 2-day from approximately 900–1,100 TND for the vehicle and guide. Accommodation in desert camp, all meals, and water included.
3-day Grand Erg expedition (departing Douz or Tozeur)
The 3-day version extends east toward the Libyan border edge of the erg and includes a visit to Ksar Ghilane — a remote oasis with natural hot springs surrounded entirely by desert. Ksar Ghilane has a small cluster of permanent camps (Pansea Ksar Ghilane, Camp Sahara Services) with basic but clean facilities.
Cost (3-day): approximately 500–650 TND per person shared; private expedition from approximately 1,400–1,800 TND for the vehicle and guide. Accommodation at Ksar Ghilane oasis camps and one night in the open dunes.
Ksar Ghilane camp note: Camp Pansea Ksar Ghilane is the best-known option, with solar lighting, hot showers fed by the natural spring, and meals included. Bookable directly or through Douz operators.
What to bring on any 4x4 tour
The operators provide the vehicle and water, but these items make a significant difference:
- Sun protection: SPF 50+ and a wide-brim hat. The desert sun is intense even in spring and autumn.
- Layers: mornings and evenings in the desert are cold outside July–August. A fleece or light down jacket is essential for any tour after 17:00.
- Closed shoes: sandals are not suitable for dune walking. Sand gets extremely hot in summer and cold at night.
- Cash in TND: most local operators do not accept cards. Douz and Tozeur have ATMs; load up before departing.
- Camera with dust protection: the fine sand of the Grand Erg gets into everything. A simple zip-lock bag around a phone is enough.
Best time of year for Sahara 4x4 tours
October–November and March–April are the peak desert months for good reason. Daytime temperatures sit at 22–30°C on the dunes, evenings are cool but comfortable (10–15°C), and visibility is generally excellent. These months also see higher operator availability, so group rates are easier to find.
December–February is cold at night (4–8°C on the erg, occasionally below freezing in January) but the days are clear and the light quality for photography is outstanding. Camp operators add blankets and the experience is authentic rather than tourist-polished.
May–June is transitional — warming quickly. Manageable but not ideal for extended dune travel.
July–August should be avoided unless you have experience in extreme heat. Surface temperatures on the dunes exceed 60°C at midday and 4x4 engine strain is significantly higher.
Booking in advance vs on arrival
Advance booking (GetYourGuide or direct operator WhatsApp) is recommended for:
- Multi-day tours October–March (capacity is limited and the camps fill up)
- Private tours at any time of year
- Groups of 6 or more who want a dedicated vehicle
On arrival booking works fine for:
- Solo travellers or pairs looking to join a shared departure from Douz, particularly April–September
- Half-day tours from Matmata where capacity is rarely an issue
GetYourGuide lists verified operators for both Douz and Tozeur departures with standardised cancellation policies (usually free cancellation up to 24 hours before). This is the safest option if your travel dates are fixed and your flight times are tight.
